All sides must help lower risk factors to reduce road accidents

Ref: "Driver in fatal crossing accident used 'yaba': police", National, December 20.

In general, it is already dangerous when drivers see a yellow traffic light and speeds up to pass through it. It is even more serious when a driver taking amphetamines drives his small truck through a red light and hits and kills a woman crossing Asoke Road right in front of her office who has the green light.
Employers must strictly inspect and prohibit employees from doing drugs including not allowing them to drive.
There was a straight road, four-lane traffic area and no traffic island at the scene. The district office must seriously coordinate with agencies to improve crosswalks by making them wide and raised with a parabolic or flat speed hump, which pedestrians can walk across.
There should be warning and speed limit signs so that drivers can slow and stop before a crosswalk. Creating pedestrian overpasses is another safety alternative.
Drivers must be extra careful especially when there are pedestrians in the traffic areas in dense communities. Driving too fast has consequences not less deadly than drunk driving.
Using cars and roads carefully and complying with traffic laws strictly, including managing traffic calming measures are all things that could significantly increase safety on roads.
