Animal rights need a lot more bite

Re: "Man surrenders after being charged with killing dog 'without reason'", National, January 23.

I’m pleased to see that the unjustified killing of a dog has been described as “murder”. But how long will it be before we describe the unjustified killing of farmed cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, etc, as murder? Given that we can live healthily and happily without eating meat, the killing of these animals is every bit as unjustified as the killing of the stray dog. Meat is definitely murder.
