History post-World War II has shown that US foreign policy is unconcerned with rights or democracy, as evidenced by Washington’s current endorsement of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, plus many other such dictatorial regimes in the past. The US will actively support whichever side is most easily controlled and bent to its wishes.
General Prayut, however, should tread carefully. History has also shown that Washington will stop at nothing in (try not to laugh) the defence of the United States, and generally has the power and wherewithal, legal or otherwise, to get its own way in the end.
