The editorial is a must read for anyone who wishes to look toward Thailand’s future in a rational way. Its message is clear – that reconciliation as currently conceived by the authorities is unachievable. It reminded me of a lecturer telling us that in life there can never be a neutral person, because each and every one of us is coloured by his or her family and educational background and immediate surroundings.
The scepticism expressed over the ongoing reconciliation attempts was well reasoned and daring. It invites us to focus on the facts of our current situation and call for genuine reform that delivers a just society with full transparency. But the foundation of that just and fair society will only be formed when the guilty are made to account fully for their past crimes.
