THE HUMBLE but endlessly adaptable T-shirt has found a whole new line of usefulness thanks to Patteera Chwengchaiyong. Now you can look like a Cub Scout, a motorcycle-taxi guy or someone in a tux who can’t afford a tux.
Patteera’s Sai Di Dee brand lets people indulge in a little nostalgia for their youth.
She got the idea in 2011 after seeing office workers dressed up in junior-school uniforms for a theme party. She printed up the initial batch of T-shirts just for fun, not thinking they’d become so popular. But that’s what happened at the Fat Festival, where the kids snapped them up.
Patteera took the shirts |to Facebook, adopting the brand name Sai Di Dee, and has since earned around 2,000 followers.
“I’ve worked at Number 4 Design for years, but I want to turn my creativity to a collection of T-shirts,” she says. “I played with a student uniform at first – everyone’s familiar with that. Then I screen-printed a shirt to look like a scout uniform.”
Using only top-quality cotton, she offers 13 different designs based on uniforms, including Cub Scout, Air Scout, Sea Scout, Red Cross Youth, security guard, motor-taxi driver and even Reserve Officer Training Corps. The colours mimic the originals, but the shirts are more playful in the details.
The dark blue Air Scout tee has a yellow neckerchief. The Cub Scout shirt is white adorned with a blue and red neckerchief.
There’s a more feminine-looking blue T-shirt with a bow-like scarf, and a green tee with the Reserve motto “Save the land”.
There are five sizes to choose among, up to XXL, and the price is Bt390. They look great with jeans, shorts and skirts. And, just so the adults don’t hog all the fun, Patteera has made five designs for kids, priced at Bt200.
