While David Brown is correct in calling an international driving licence “a permit”, no traffic officer in his right mind would request that you produce your “driving permit”. You will simply be asked for your “driving licence”. That is the terminology used. Producing an international licence is usually sufficient. However David Brown is correct in saying that a Thai traffic policeman is legally entitled to request your licence from your own country. It is the basis for your international licence.
Just as there is proliferation of false international driving licences. Any purchased through the Internet is a fake. You have to appear in person before a designated authority to be issued such a licence. You cannot rent a vehicle in some countries without a valid international licence.
Furthermore, tourists from Southeast Asian countries don’t have to produce an international licence because those from their home countries are valid here.
Should you find yourself in the same position as me, with an expired licence from your home country, you can obtain an international one from the Land Transport Office in Chon Buri – 147 Moo 1, Sukhumvit Road Chonburi (phone 03 827 5202). Alf Haupt
