Don't execute Bali Nine inmates

Re: "The long view of Indonesian death rows", News, March 7.

Like John Patterson, I, too, would like to see both men spared from death. However I would not ask President Joko Widodo to do so through threats or labelling Indonesia a pariah state if I were rebuffed. But I would ask for mercy for the two for their regretful errors.
If I were one of the convicts, I would have wished Prime Minister Tony Abbott never pleaded on my behalf. His pleas were so abominable they would have enhanced my chance of death.
His words induced a strong desire to maintain the rule of law in Indonesia, where laws apply equally to all Indonesians and foreigners alike.
I cringed when I heard Abbott’s call for Indonesia to remember Australia’s A$1 billion in aid after the 2004 tsunami and his threats of consequences if his pleas go unanswered.
I would like to beg President Jokowi to forgive such arrogance and ill manners and please delay your decision and reconsider the situation when the publicity is at its lowest point.
