My assessment is that the US badly needs to acquire a Thai military base as part of its Asian pivot strategy to confront China.
The US government is also promoting its corporate agenda in trying to grab an offshore gas development business in the Gulf of Thailand.
Both were hot, controversial topics during Thaksin’s successive governments. The military coup dealt a fatal blow to the US’s plan.
The US government and its corporate lobbyists rightly see they have a better chance of fulfilling both objectives with Thailand returning to the status quo with Thaksin in control. Any reform the present government is trying to impose to eradicate Thaksin’s power and influence obviously is not in US interests. All the US wants is a quick return to its version of democracy and the ballot box.
