Charter is thick with etiquette

Re: "We want rule by law, not laws for rulers", Editorial, April 21.

The chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC), Borwornsak Uwanno, sounded serious when he said Thailand’s new constitution will give more power to the people. However, it seems the draft charter contains more directives by which citizens must conduct themselves rather than guarantees of our rights.
The fact is that we are getting another constitution that’s as thick as a pocketbook, and reads like a school guide telling schoolchildren how to behave.
Mr Bowornsak and the CDC should study the constitution of the US, only four pages long, and the UK system, which has no written constitution, to form an idea of how concise an effective constitution should be.
