Insurance company should be forced to pay full compensation

Re: "On Thai roads, might has right of way", Letters, May 15.

Your correspondent Sombat Kapeng mentions the culture of impunity and lack of accountability on Thai roads. This week another horror story from the roads of Thailand is reported in the media. Chilean cyclist Juan Francisco Guillermo was killed in February in Nakhon Ratchasima while on the last stage of a round of the world cycling marathon. The truck driver responsible for his death and injuries to his Singaporean wife and child was given a one-year jail sentence, suspended for two years, and fined Bt7,500 for reckless driving causing death. How cheap is human life in Thailand!

Now it appears that the dead man’s insurance company is refusing to pay the full amount of Bt1.5 million owing to the victim’s family and has offered less than half that amount – Bt630,000.
Is there no way to force this predatory company to pay what it owes? Surely there is a government department that regulates these sharks?
