Half is better than none

Re: "Samui beaches dodge junta clean-up mission", Letters, June 24.

The writer complains about Koh Samui’s beaches being packed with umbrellas and chairs while other famous beaches are clear, implying that the junta has yielded to the “influential people” on Samui.

I have an adage for the writer: “Give them an inch and they’ll want a foot. Give them a foot and they’ll want a yard.”
I think the junta has done a good job so far, but surely it can’t please everyone. (I’m not the junta’s fan, but I take the coup with resignation.) Furthermore, Samui belongs to Surat Thani province, home base of a prominent politician whose party “cleared the path” for the junta to move in. You get the picture.
Let’s be optimistic. The junta has half-filled the empty glass, and we should appreciate that.
