Enormous source of English expertise going untapped

Re: "English teaching needs a bottom-up approach", Editorial, September 16.

The greatest omission of this article is that there are millions of native English speakers in Thailand, living as retirees. Many would be happy to teach or assist in learning, but the retirement visa does not allow them to work.
This could be corrected easily by offering foreign retirees permanent residency or providing them a path to Thai citizenship. Currently, to be eligible for Thai citizenship, an applicant must be working, so retirees cannot become citizens.
