THE PIONEER of Bangkok’s much-loved dessert cafes and founder of After You, Kulapat “May” Kanokwatanawan has always wanted to share happiness with ice cream. Last year, she decided to make that dream true and launched her very own ice cream parlour called Crumb, inviting her customers to design their mouth-watering sundaes and decorate them with several kinds of colourful toppings.
Snuggled between the high-end fashion boutiques on the third floor of Central Embassy, Crumb is a welcome respite from the hard work of shopping. Red brick walls contrast with the white ceiling and the wooden tables and chairs make for a homely feel.
“I don’t make it known that this is a sister brand of After You as both the concept and menu are different. I like to eat sweets and have been creating my own recipes since I was in my teens. My original plan was to open an ice cream parlour but I eventually decided to go with After You. That was in 2007, a time when there were very few dessert cafes in a town. It did better than I could ever have imagined and is still especially popular with young people and office workers,” she says.
There is no shibayu honey toast at Crumbs but the range of ice cream is more than enough to compensate. The milk-based dessert is available in 18 flavours including vanilla, frozen yoghurt, mint chocolate chip, raspberry lychee, yoghurt red velvet cookie dough, hazelnut, matcha green tea, melon, Belgian milk chocolate, mocha chip, salted caramel, cookie and cream and honeycomb.
The toppings are also as varied with marshmallow, M&M chocolate, toasted barley, toasted hazelnut, Oreo cookie, salted caramel popcorn, rainbow sprinkles and berry jelly to choice from. Ice cream starts at Bt85 a scoop and you pay an additional Bt25 to Bt50 for sweets and fresh fruits.
“My ice cream is less sweet than the store-bought variety and has a much smoother texture. I use top quality ingredients like strawberries from Australia and New Zealand and put apple sauce in my brownies rather than sugar. Customers are always ordering the cheesecake ice cream and matcha candy bar. I also have a pink chocolate ice cream made from Pocky sticks,” Kulapat says.
Must-tries include Raspberry Smash (Bt135), frozen yoghurt ice cream, topped with strawberry sauce and butter cake, Salted Caramel Popcorn (Bt135), which blends salted caramel and honeycomb ice creams and comes with a popcorn and caramel sauce, and Blueberry Ice Cream Cheese Pie (Bt125), which is topped with blueberry sauce.
Kulapat also offers a range of drinks like sweet and sour Pink Lemonade (Bt135), which mixes syrup with lemon and lemon peel, and Tutti Frutti Fizz (Bt175) made from raspberry, blueberry and sparkling water.
