KIRK SCHILLER is often seen on TV shows and movies in all sorts of supporting roles, from the hero’s best friend to the bad guy, even as the occasional ladyboy. What few viewers know is that he also has a “day job” as a hairdresser, a sideline to his acting career.
Well, we say “few TV viewers”, but Kirk’s Facebook page has more than 131,000 followers, and he’s just told them that he’s now available to cut guys’ hair – and not just in person but at his home. He’s set up a salon in his premises on Soi 20 off Sukhabhiban 5 Road. “We’re open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and anyone who wants a haircut can enjoy a flat rate of Bt500 until the end of the year,” Kirk announced.
Several fans have already taken him up on the offer and the reviews, also posted on his Facebook page, are good, which is actually outstanding considering that he’s never had a clipping lesson in his life. He’s completely self-taught – as a way to fill in spare hours, interestingly enough.
“On the set I’m sometimes really busy, but there are times when I have all time in the world to kill,” Kirk tells Matichon Online, referring to the hours spent just hanging around until he’s needed. “So I got this idea to start cutting people’s hair and I bought electric clippers and started doing the crew’s hair for free.” YouTube offered some pointers too (you really can learn anything on YouTube).
As his skills gradually improved, his crewmember “guinea pigs” were soon posting “hair by Kirk” photos on Instagram with words of praise. “I enjoyed doing it,” he says, “because the electricians and technicians and other staff tend to look untidy, and the haircuts made them look better.”
Hairdressing remained a hobby for two years, but then it dawned on him that he should get a little more serious about it. “I started acting when I was 13 or 14 and I still love it and have loads of work, but sometimes I’d think I should have a job where I could spend more time with my three kids,” Kirk says.
So he opened his barber shop two months ago in an unused acting studio next to his house. As for a particular approach to trimming tresses, he doesn’t do anything special, but rather just tries to make sure the guy looks better when he leaves than he did when he came in. “I’ll spend all the time in the world making sure my customers look their best.”
Get in line to have your hair clipped by a TV star via a Line message or through his Facebook page, but don’t dawdle because he’s already planning to expand.
“I think by next year we’ll move out to the main road”, meaning a proper salon with decent Sukhabhiban frontage, and staff to help. Get to his current digs now, though, and he’ll do everything himself, from wash to blow-dry. And for just Bt500!
