We breathe much worse than second-hand smoke

Regarding the ongoing discussion in the letters column about second-hand smoke, I don't smoke, and yet I don't mind second-hand smoke.

Even cigar smoke is okay with me – it smells nice. There are far more dire things in the air to worry about. Have you ever used a flashlight in a dark room and seen all the dust? And there are countless more particles (viruses, asbestos, plastic residue, chemicals, etc) that you can’t see. This is the reason I avoid cities like the plague. A city-dweller breathes in more crap in one hour than I breathe in a full day in the countryside.
Even the smoke from burning brush is not so bad. When you were a kid sitting at a campfire, you were breathing in smoke from the burning wood. It was a drag (pun intended), but not so terrible. It’s residues from man-made chemicals that are the real health hazards. Look in any supermarket, hardware store or auto-parts shop and you see thousands of weird chemicals that are now part of our world. You’re breathing residues from those chemicals every day.
