Achara Deboonme’s latest column offered a thought-provoking picture of the life of a corporate executive that, no matter how powerful or luxurious, is not something for the rest of us to envy.
Forty years ago I turned down the chance to climb the corporate ladder in an up-and-coming agricultural conglomerate in Bangkok and instead headed home to the provinces.
In Chiang Mai my wife and I started a small restaurant with the little money we received as our wedding present. These days our business, even though still small, is doing just fine. The place is packed most of the time.
Now retired, I am very happy with my new job taking care of my seven-year-old grandson. My wife and I have bequeathed everything to our only daughter and her family. We are very happy and contented. On the five days a week that I take my grandson to swimming drill, I also enjoy the luxury of a cool and soothing dip.
I feel desperately sorry for the corporate big guys that Achara mentions. They are starved of the one thing I am rich in – time.
