Singapore vs Thailand: two more points

Referring to Mr Somsak Pola's letter yesterday on "Singapore: why it has done well?" may I point some different important points which are different.

1. Fifty years ago, when Singapore started to build a subway for mass transportation; we have the same but the Thai government chose to build expressways first, which led to a tremendous increase of private cars. Thirty years later we just started to build mass transportation. Singapore has a limit on private car purchases but we have leaders that lure our people to buy an extra one million private cars.
2. While Singapore is located at the mouth of Malacca strait and is suitable for building a port and being a hub of transport, we could create a canal which would make a better route for this purpose [commercial shipping] but we still fail to build it.
I am sure if we had a good leader like Mr Lee, at least we would do much better on these two matters.
