Justice and fairness must be embraced

This year is crucial for Thailand from a political perspective. The first task will be getting the draft charter accepted in a referendum.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said recently that he hoped a referendum will approve the charter and peaceful elections can be held after that. There is no premium on hope, but if the current charter compromises on the principle of fairness, it is likely to be shot down in a referendum. A constitution is merely guiding principles for the running of a nation. There are democratic countries that don’t even have a written constitution, Israel being one example.
In Thailand’s current scenario, reconciliation is a prerequisite for political progress, and that cannot be achieved unless the principles of justice and fairness are embraced.
