Just a few weeks ago, red-shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan said Thaksin Shinawatra escaping abroad from his jail sentence was an “invaluable mistake”.
In the meantime Jatuporn advised Yingluck Shinawatra against following her brother abroad amid ongoing court proceedings over charges of corruption while she was in office.
Now, the big news is that Thaksin has asked for reconciliation with those who hold power in Thailand. It seems Thaksin has realised that the backing of his cronies and supporters alone is not enough to secure his return home: his enemies must do the same.
However, he doesn’t seem to realise that his claims of doing so much for the country are countered by his enemies saying he has done damage unprecedented in Thai history. Thaksin’s past divisive tactics and hubris are also well remembered.
Hence, it seems reconciliation among ordinary Thais is still far off, as long as political players continue to pay lip service to one another.
