A law that kills freedom of expression

Re: “Lese majeste law should be amended, not annulled”, Letters, February 22.

Not long ago the government said it should explain to the rest of the world the necessity of the 
 
Re: “Lese majeste law should be amended, not annulled”, Letters, February 22.. And recently a letter in this column said Thai sovereignty was dependent on this law. Since such a comment strikes me as total nonsense, I would love an explanation.
In my country Americans are routinely critical of their political and religious leaders. Not even Jesus Christ is spared. Far from destroying American sovereignty, such diversity of opinion strengthens it, since it teaches us to tolerate all views, including those we hate.
Using myself as an example, many (not all) of my critics are horrible human beings. But the same rights that allow them to be horrible also allow me to fight against cruelty and injustice. In other words, in order to protect the rights of the good, we also have to protect the rights of the bad.
