Top brass would muffle President Trump

Re: “Nothing to stop a trigger-happy Trump”, Letters, March 23.

Though military defiance of a presidential order is hardly the norm in the US, former CIA and National Security Agency chief Michael Hayden clarified that it could happen if Donald Trump were elected and then gave orders in line with election pledges that are illegal and blatantly immoral.
History tells us that president Harry Truman did not sack General Douglas MacArthur on his own. Somsak Pola’s sarcasm does not help us appreciate the nuance in that history. Swayed by MacArthur’s immense popularity and ticker-tape homecoming parade in New York, Congress actually wanted to impeach Truman. The attempt was aborted when it found out that Truman’s order had been made with the unanimous support of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
For dismissing a war hero, Truman was eventually hailed as one of the great presidents. Certain of Trump’s campaign messages would not pass muster with the powerful Joint Chiefs of Staff.
This system of open government and checks and balances ensures no one can be beyond reproach in America, including Trump.
