Islam tells men to respect their wives, not beat them

Husbands can now beat their wives “lightly” if they disobey them, according to a recommendation by Pakistan’s Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) in its new Women Protection Bill.

Women have fought for their rights for decades in Pakistan, a country where so-called honour killings and acid attacks remain commonplace.
The proposal includes step-by-step guidelines on how men are to beat their wives. The document does suggest that violence be used only as a last resort for a wife’s disobedience. The CII suggests that any man who doesn’t follow the processes should be prosecuted.
Our Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) never beat his wives or mistreated them in any way. In fact, he said: “The best for you is the one who is the best to his wife.” What is being portrayed is not true Islam. True Islam is to treat women like angels.
