It’s not a matter of “falling shy” of “answering the question whether the country in May 2014 was ungovernable”. Groups of PDRC and affiliated factions, players plainly tried to make that the case, but who can really verifiably know if they succeeded?
According to Songdej, “an overwhelming majority of Thais” believed so – allegedly it “was not manageable through the democratic process”.
He offers nothing to support this and the more hyperbolic claim of “an explosive nationwide division that even the military could not contain”. It seems clear from reports that the military largely sat on its hands – until deciding to put near-absolute power into them. So, I ask again – “ungovernable”, “not manageable”, who can know? No surprise that Songdej treats his claims as “fact” – else he’d be left with no more than “flimsy excuses” for the military take-over.
With his “Steve is adamant that...” excursion, Songdej unfortunately strays into rewriting my original words to invent something that I didn’t say – and then unsurprisingly disagrees with it.
I suggest to him he’d do better confining himself to tackling what others actually say, rather than erecting strawmen and toppling them. That gambit is not dialogue – just monologue.
I can agree with much of his final paragraph, though there’s plainly no shortage of “controversy” from non-politicians who are also strongly opposed to the draft charter.
Like him – but for many more reasons than he chooses to include – I’m also “fairly certain this will not be the final coup”.
