EASY COZY, billed as “a smart solution for smart living”, sells furniture and home decor made from the wood of para rubber trees, much of it a perfect fit for compact abodes.
The store in Nonthaburi, stocked with multifunctional, highly durable pieces, belongs to Puscha Chiranurungsee and her family, who’ve been in the interior-design business for more than a decade.
The idea for Easy Cozy arose when Puscha, a Chulalongkorn University accounting grad, asked her father to create a specific kind of wooden table for her kitchen.
Unexpectedly, that piece became the prototype for what’s now sold as the two-seat Drop Leaf dining table. It’s got an extendable top and its own storage areas and rolls on casters. Introduced on the family’s online store in 2014, it was an instant hit.
The Easy Cozy Facebook page currently has more than 20,000 followers getting regular updates on what’s new in adjustable sizes and a wide range of colours to match any home and lifestyle.
“We want to change the way people think about solid-wood furniture – it doesn’t have to be expensive or bulky,” says Puscha. “We’ve seen the potential in the Bangkok
retail market and we’re targeting people who live in condominiums and love minimalist designs.
“The wood we use has been dried and then chemically ‘smoked’ to protect it from insects. The furniture pieces are coated with a double layer of lacquer, so they’re waterproof and easy to clean. And we guarantee their durability – this furniture will survive sitting in water for a month!”
That’s definitely a plus, given the threats of flooding that Bangkok increasingly faces.
The showroom on Nakorn In Road in Nonthaburi opened in February, so all those online shoppers could get a first-hand look at the pieces. It has its motto “Easy way for cozy living”, and a lot of the furniture has a simple, even playful appeal. At the same time it’s functional in more ways than one and is definitely easy to move about.
The Regular Folding Table has a sliding top that doubles as a drawer. The Cozy Bar Stool is visually striking with its white seat. The Shoe Cabinet becomes a two-seater bench. The Two-seat Sofa has loads of storage room. Another bar stool is equipped with a handle. And the TV Bench has storage space too, and not just for the remote control.
“Everything has been polished by hand and matte-coated on top so you can see the wood texture,” Puscha says. “The joining techniques we use make the furniture easy to fold and move around.”
The parawood is toned and sold as “natural”, “walnut” and “medium oak”. You need to give them three to four weeks’ notice when ordering the last two.
New Zealand pinewood comes into play in the Picnic Bench with a 20-year warranty, which has a backrest that folds up for use as a set of table and chair. There are also pinewood crates that can be assembled in three different ways, and a foldable Easy Shelf with black and white plastwood sheets.
The home accessories include card holders and coasters made of maple that can be converted into stands for a mobile phone or iPad, a sheep-shaped bookshelf in oriented strand board (flakeboard), and a para-plywood pen holder. You can also get wooden jewellery boxes and cotton pillowcases.
