First, former Revenue Department deputy chief and former deputy finance minister Benja Louischareon was sentenced to three years in prison for helping Thaksin’s son and younger daughter avoid personal income tax payments to the state. The sum of the loss for the state was Bt16 billion (U$450 million).
The second was former finance minister Surapong Suebwonglee, who was sentenced to one year in jail for the irregular and unlawful appointment of three people who had vested interests as board members of the Bank of Thailand.
The three appointed men have been accused of servitude to corrupt politicians – as against their own country’s interests.
It is worth noting that one of these convicted former ministers is also a former student activist. So, young, innocent-looking activists that we see today might not be the same folk when they become our country’s political players tomorrow.
