THE NEXT time you’re in Chiang Mai and feel the urge for a quiet beer and a burger, Namton’s House Bar might just hit the spot.
Located on the tranquil Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, the bar is the brainchild of Chaiwoot Satumanasphan and his wife Kantida who transformed their old family home into a cafe and bistro serving up a variety of home-made foods with lots of beer options.
The couple managed to keep the original old wood building and pieced together some of the furniture from wood crates, while Kantida’s father donated his collectibles to decorate the walls.
“Kantida’s family once built the Siwilai Wittaya School on this land 70 years ago and then they turned it into a house where we and friends would often host a party. Kantida and I love drinking beer. When we want to do business, we want to start from what we love,” Chaiwoot says.
“Now, our bistro offers around 70 kinds of craft beers, both on a tap and in a bottle, imported from around the world. Most beers are based on malt, hops, yeast, spices and fruit. American beer is made from hops, Japanese beer is blended with mineral water to give a smooth flavour and Australian beer is brewed with hobs and malt.”
Chaiwoot recommends two particular craft beers – Tap 10 is a blend of BrewDog Elvis Juice infused with grapefruit peel with an ABV of 6.5 per cent, for Bt180, and Tap 3 is Sandport Broken Sword Red Ale with an ABV of 5.4 per cent, for Bt150.
Chaiwoot also offers a butter beer for anyone who doesn’t drink alcohol and there is another blend with vanilla, cocoa and coffee. They are priced at Bt100.
As well as Thai, the menu has recipes from Italy and Japan, designed to pair with drinks. Among the most popular are Home-made Smoked Bacon (Bt180) and crispy fried Homemade Potato Wedges (Bt80), served with ketchup and home-made mayonnaise. The bistro also offers a variety of Japanese fish, starting at Bt180 to Bt350.
Main dishes include Fatty Pork (Bt180), where a tender pork neck is marinated in BBQ sauce before being grilled and served with grilled potatoes topped with sour cream, for Bt180, and Curry Beef Hamburger (Bt180) comes with a choice of normal bun, white wheat bun and faloot bread.
For dessert, beer ice cream made from barley malt and wine apple cider sorbet is a must-try for Bt70 a scoop.
