Teenage Jirat Upset Fourth Seed in Hua Hin Men's Futures 3.

Teenage rising star Jirat Navasirisomboon put up a doggy fight to upset third seed Vishnu Vardhan of India 7-5 3-6 6-5 in the first round of the US$10,000 Cal-Comp & XYZ Printing ITF Thailand Men’s Futures 3 at True Arena yesterday.

The 19-year-old from Bangkok, the only Thai to win a Bangkok Challenger first round match last week, staved off several break points in the seventh game of the final set to produce an upset win over the 477 th ranked Indian in one hour and 52 minutes.

“Holding that game was very crucial. I knew I could turn it around if I went up 4-3 as he seemed tired and started missing. I’m happy to pull it off in a tough match like this,” said Jirat who will take on South Korean former world junior No 3 Yunseong Chung in the second round.

“I have never played him before but any South Korean will be tough. I have to keep up with the good fight from today going into that match,” said Jirat, a sophomore from Rajhabat Suan Dusit University.

Joining him in round two was compatriot Pruchya Isarow who defied his knee injury to beat Yuichi Ito of Japan in one hour and 39 minutes.

“I started slow and was broken right from the start. So I told myself to focus more on the serves and the return and successfully broke him back for four all. I broke him at crucial games at the end of both sets to win,” said Pruchya who will face second seed   Antoine Escoffier of France, a 7-5 7-5 winner over  Ken Onishi of Japan.

“I’ve seen him play before. I have to maintain my level to create my chance against him,” said the national Davis Cup player.

In the other opening round actions, top seed and last week’s finalist Hong Seong Chan of South Korea beat Japanese Ryota Tanuma 6-3 7-6 (8-6), sixth seed Quyang Bowen of China beat compatriot Zhou Sheng Hao 6-3  6-2,  Australian Calum Puttergill beat Congsup Congcar 7-5 6-2, while eighth seed Daniel Nolan of Australia was stunned by Japanese Renta Tokuda 6-4 6-3.

Two Chinese qualifiers earned their spots in round two in the all qualifiers affairs.  Wang Huixin beat Thai Chayanon Kaewsuto 6-4 3-6 6-4 while Cao Zhaoyi beat Briton-Thai Jamie Asanee Praditngam 6-2 6-7 (1-7) 6-0.
