Red hot Chinese Gao Xinyu staged the biggest upset of the US$25,000 Singha Cal-Comp & XYZ Printing ITF Women’s Circuit 2 after she knocked out top seed Arina Rodionova of Australia 6-1 2-6 7-5 in the second round actions at True Arena Hua Hin on Wednesda
The 18-year-old from Beijing who just celebrated her first US$25,000 ITF trophy here on Saturday staged another great comeback win, fighting off two match points at 4-5 in the final set to stun the 186 th ranked opponent after two hours and 29 minutes.
Gao on Saturday saved a match point at 4-5 in the third set to beat Japanese Shiho Akita 6-2 1-6 7-5 to win the first circuit at this same arena.
Gao will set up a re-match with Akita in the quarter-finals. Akita meanwhile beat Na Ri Kim of South Korea 6-2 7-5.
In the other second round matches, third seed Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands beat Maria Paigina of Russia 6-3 7-6 (8-6), fourth seed Aleksandrina Naydenova of Bulgaria beat Fang Ying Xun of China 6-3 7-6 (7-5) and seventh seed Nicha Lertpitaksinchai beat Chinese Lu Jiaxi 6-2 6-4 .
