Gao on Saturday saved a match point at 4-5 in the third set to beat Japanese Shiho Akita 6-2 1-6 7-5 to win the first circuit at this same arena.
Gao will set up a re-match with Akita in the quarter-finals. Akita meanwhile beat Na Ri Kim of South Korea 6-2 7-5.
In the other second round matches, third seed Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands beat Maria Paigina of Russia 6-3 7-6 (8-6), fourth seed Aleksandrina Naydenova of Bulgaria beat Fang Ying Xun of China 6-3 7-6 (7-5) and seventh seed Nicha Lertpitaksinchai beat Chinese Lu Jiaxi 6-2 6-4 .
