Brace for the fallout when Trump loses

Re: “Taking a serious look at Trump policies,” Letters, October 18.

I’m sure most of us expats and foreigners would agree with Egon that Donald Trump is “a putrid belch from the sewer”. But I fear you get the governments you deserve. In the Philippines, a fan of mass murder who dislikes the rule of law is the most popular president ever. The near-xenophobic government in Hungary openly defies EU policies, while in France the daughter of a man who once said the Nazi gas chambers were a myth will soon be a credible presidential candidate.
The horrible Trump appeals to many segments in US society: Clinton haters, conspiracy theorists, racists, sexists, the poor betrayed by globalisation and the increasing legions who think politics are just one big joke with or without female genitalia to mock. The idea that these folk are merely fringe groups is belied by the fact that Trump will win at least 40 per cent of the vote next month. Like all demagogues, he favours one-line slogans rather than detailed policies.
Trump surely knows he will lose this time around. But he already has a large and angry army ready to believe that victory was stolen by a corrupt Wall Street establishment, voter fraud and a partisan mass media.
If we are lucky, Trump will simply start a tedious TV station to pump out ongoing propaganda. If we are unlucky, his cohorts will take to the barricades with their pitchforks and torches. Dr Goebbels said it all. “You must repeat a lie again and again until it becomes a real truth.”
