Charyl earns late call up for Asean Championship

Suphanburi FC midfielder Charyl Chappuis has been drafted in as one of the reinforcements for Thailand’s title defence at the Asean Championship next month.

The 24-year-old Thai-Swiss player had initially missed out on a place in the 23-man list announced by the Football Association of Thailand for the biennial tournament running between November 19 and December 17.

The former Switzerland youth team player, though, was one of four more players along with Chonburi FC’s Nattaphon Malaphan, Si Sa Ket FC’s Siwapong Jarernsin and BEC Tero Sasana’s Chenrop Samphaodi who earned late call-ups by coach Kiatisak Senamuang on Monday.

Chappuis’ inclusion means he stands a chance of representing the country in the event for second time in a row after helping the Kingdom win their fourth title two years ago to become the tournament’s joint most successful countries along with Singapore.

In the 2016 Championship, where the group stages will take place in the Philippines and Myanmar, Thailand have been drawn in Group A alongside the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia. Malaysia, the 2014 finalists, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar are in Group B.
