The TPP is designed for big business, not human welfare

Re: “Trump’s isolationism would torpedo trade with Thailand, Asia”, Letters, October 27.

The ones who fear the failure of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) are economists and big exporters. What matters to them are numbers, not human welfare. According to this theory the previous North American Free Trade Agreement was a failure. It is clear that the new treaty – which is so secret that it cannot be published, and where agreements are based on the prerogative of foreign corporations to sue another country if sales are not to their satisfaction – is wrong.
Trade agreements should only happen if there is mutual respect for the sovereignty of each country involved, and they must be made in the interests of the majority, not a few multinational companies. Let’s aim for sustainable economies instead. The more we can rely on ourselves, the better we feel.
