JC Wilcox gets everything wrong in venting his ire on the British High Court judges who have ruled that parliament must debate and vote on the recent referendum decision by the British people to leave the European Union.
The judges’ ruling is not an attack on democracy. Parliament makes the law and judges interpret and apply the law. That’s how the law works in a democracy. Wilcox is also wrong to question the wisdom of these judges. They have all spent long careers in the legal profession and are thus far more conversant than he is with the law and all its nuances and complexities.
Fortunately our Prime Minister Theresa May, unlike JC Wilcox, has reacted to this decision in a calm, sensible and measured way. She has defended the principle of the independence of the judiciary, and will now lodge an appeal with the Supreme Court in an attempt to have this ruling overturned. As a supporter of “Brexit”, I do hope that will be the decision, but everyone in a democracy has to respect the rule of law, even when legal rulings go against what we hoped for. That, Mr Wilcox, is the basis of a true democracy.
