IF YOU’RE looking for a soundbar sound system that can literally rock your world, LG’s new SH7 might be an explosive answer to your audio needs.
Despite its deceivingly slim design, the SH7’s 4.1-channel system comes with 360 watts of output power even although the soundbar itself is only 1060 x 53 x 85mm in size, and the subwoofer is 171 x 320 x 252mm.
The silver-coloured SH7 is designed to sit in front of your large screen LED TV or to be attached under your wall-mounted TV to replace and enhance the television’s sound system.
It comprises a four-speaker array. Two of them function as front speakers with 40 watts each and the other two surround speakers also have 40 watts each. The wireless subwoofer has 200 watts of power – more than enough to shake the floor if you’re watching an action movie with a lot of gunfire and explosions.
If you use a LG TV you can wirelessly sync the soundbar with your TV. With any other make of TV you can connect the TV’s digital audio output to the digital audio input of the soundbar.
The SH7 also has an HDMI input and HDMI output so you can use the soundbar to play sounds from sources such as the TrueVisions satellite receiver. You simply connect the HDMI output from the box to the SH7 and connect the SH7’s HDMI output to your TV and the soundbar will play movie sounds and pass the picture signals to your TV.
If you connect the unit’s HDMI output to the HDMI port of your TV that supports ARC (Audio Return Channel), you can play sound from the TV without an optical audio cable.
The unit can also stream and play music from your smartphone or tablet computer using Bluetooth.
It also has Google Cast built-in, which allows you to cast your favourite music apps like Spotify, Deezer, Napster and Google Play from your smart phone or tablet.
The SH7 comes with remote control to select various functions and effects on the soundbar and subwoofer.
Apart from Bluetooth, LG TV sync, and optical audio input, it also supports Wi-Fi and portable-in audio sources. The portable input connects to a MP3 player with a 3.5mm stereo jack while the Wi-Fi function uses the system’s Multi-Room feature.
The remote control allows you to select the standard sound effect, ASC (adaptive sound control) or cinema sound effect. The ASC is LG’s unique adaptive audio engine that analyses the frequency levels to provide an optimal sound mix based on what you are watching.
Moreover, the remote control also allows you to tweak the system’s bass and tweeter level.
The Multi-Room mode adds several other useful features if you have other LG speakers.
You can use the SH7 as the main unit of your audio network, using the Multi-Room mode, and connect it to your home router with a LAN cable. You can then add more speakers to your audio network by simply pressing the Wi-Fi button on the SH7 and on any other Multi-Room-ready speaker for the two speakers to automatically sync. More speakers can be added the same way.
You can then use the connected speakers to provide surround sound in the same room. Or you can use the central software or LG Music Flow app on your smartphone or your PC to play the same list of songs to all speakers at once in different rooms – or different playlists to different speakers.
The Music Flow Player app on your smartphone also knows when you get home and will recommend you switch from playing songs on your phone to the Multi-Room speakers.
During the test, I found the SH7 produced powerful bass and good, clear quality sounds. I enjoyed streaming rock music from my notebook computer to the system. When I streamed High-Resolution Audio files of FLAC 24bit/192kHz to the SH7, it resulting in music with clarity and good detail as well as strong and deep bass.
LG SH7 soundbar retails for Bt12,990.
