Ever wondered why Thais are so bad at English?

A TV programme featuring an English-language course has shed light on why Thais’ level of English is generally so poor.

The course has been ridiculed by social-media users for being full of schoolboy errors. And this is despite the fact it is taught by university lecturers. Among the many mistakes is the translation of “khun pen khon angrit reu?” Students are warned not to make the “frequent” mistake of translating the phrase as “Are you an England?” but instead write “Are you and England?” Of course the correct translation is “Are you English?”
Everywhere, Thais believe they can speak the only truly international language well, but no one can understand them. One ray of hope lies in the fact that it was Thai social-media users who flagged up the errors.
