From Canada to Chantaburi, with love

PAINTED IN PASTEL shades and with an old-fashioned design, the Lighthouse Bar & Grill adds a fresh feel to Chantaburi’s tranquil Kung Wiman beach with diners flocking to the eatery to sample an interesting blend of traditional Thai and Italian cuisine. 
Situated in the recently opened Peggy’s Cove Resort, this 80-seat beachfront eatery restaurants draws its inspiration from the historic Peggy’s Cove fishing village in Nova Scotia, Canada. The interior has a distinct nautical vibe achieved by the white and blue on the walls and the handcrafted ceiling lamps adapted from local fish traps.
Veteran sous chef Udorn Suriwan is responsible for the mouth-watering dishes that pair local herbs and seafood with Australian salmon to create a new taste. All dishes are easy to eat and perfect for sharing, while the sauces and curry are based on original recipes typical of Chantaburi’s cuisine. 
“We wanted to create something new and premium for Kung Wiman beach’s dining scene while avoiding competition with the locals’ grilled seafood stalls. So, we decided a menu of Thai and Italian dishes,” says Anusorn Sahachok, who owns Peggy’s Cove Resort. 
“Many of our dishes are made with salmon in a nod to Peggy’s Cove in Canada, which is famous for trout.”

Pork Curry with Chamuang Leaves

We enjoy a lunch of range of Thai favourites, namely sour Pork Curry with Chamuang Leaves (Bt250), Spicy Salmon Minced Salad (Bt280) and Sea Bass Bud Cardamom Soup (Bt240), which we are told is excellent for relieving flatulence. Those dining solo might prefer a plate of Chantaburi rice noodles with sweet sauce and fried soft-shell crab for Bt200.

After strolling along the beach and sightseeing, we return to Lighthouse for dinner and start our Western-style meal with Smoked Salmon Salad with sesame dressing (Bt280) and creamy Mushroom Soup (Bt140) made from shiitake mushroom, leek and celery that’s topped with cream. 
We follow up with Pizza Spinach with Mushroom (Bt350) and Pizza Cheese (Bt390), which combines Italian mozzarella, Parmesan and Philadelphia cheese on a super-thin and crispy crust.

Other best-sellers are the creamy, full-flavour Spaghetti Carbonara (Bt240), which is only made to order, Salmon Steak in Butter Garlic Sauce, served with mashed potato and the Fisherman Happiness set (Bt1,450), which boasts crab, tiger prawns, sliced salmon, sea bass and mussels blanched in hot water then soaked quickly in ice.

“I wanted to offer a different seafood platter so I created the Fisherman Happiness seafood. Blanching then soaking quickly in ice maintains the sweetness of the seafood,” Udorn explains.
