Essential to any relationship, be it in the schoolyard or the international forum, is respect. Respect will never be evoked and sustained through weakness.
Taiwan is a recognised sovereign nation state. It has been since 1949 when Chiang Kai-shek established the Republic of China on the island following the take over of mainland China by the Communists. It is not out of order for democratic republics to recognise each other, whether or not mutual identifying is unacceptable to totalitarianism.
A glossary of history shows that international aggression usually has an undemocratic, totalitarian source. Dictators are playground bullies who must be confronted, not appeased. China with its expansionist imperialist agenda is no exception. It has grown economically and financially dominant as a result of US weakness for cheap inferior goods. Chinese-made goods, purchased with China's money, has created a massive trade deficit and a national debt of $20 trillion for Uncle Sam to repay. There comes a time when such self-destruction has to be addressed. If that upsets the status quo by re-establishing international respect, then so be it.
Donald Trump’s phone call with Taiwan’s President Tsai ing Wen sent a clear message to China and the world. It announced that the USA is a major player on the world scene, not a nation of unemployed shopperholics, hooked on spending money they haven’t got.
Trump has no respect for established protocol, political correctness and degenerating government weakness that created a regressing America; unable to view the stars. His common sense plain-speaking will lead to international respect for the USA and all independent sovereign nation states.
