The Trump presidency and seven worried nations

Re: “The countries dreading Donald Trump’s presidency the most”, Time magazine, January 18.

Among the seven countries excluding China whose leaders will be on edge with Trump in the White House, Mexico can expect a wall on its northern border with a construction bill attached, millions of deportations and a lot of pressure on trade. If Trump continues being contentious with China, Japan will be caught between two of its biggest trading partners. Germany will face uncertainty both in domestic politics and its lead role in the EU and Nato. Trump’s embrace of Vladimir Putin will undermine Europe’s attempt to punish Russia for its roguish behaviour in the annexation of Crimea and intervention in Ukraine. France could face domestic political upheaval this spring if the far-right National Front wins in elections, having been emboldened by Trump’s victory. France could be next in line to exit from the EU.
Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, bordering Russia, could expect more trouble from their powerful neighbour if Trump becomes too accommodating with Putin.
