Shades of 1938 in May’s White House visit

So, there we have it: Theresa May’s Chamberlain-like Munich Moment. No “peace in our time”, no piece of flimsy white paper.

But a visit conferring unwarranted dignity, in shameful obeisance, on a man for whom the sobriquet ‘demagogue’ seems to be like a compliment.
Letters page Trump apologists to one side, May’s ill-advised trip into the white painted, current den of iniquity reminds me of Leni Riefenstahl’s snivelling 1934 propagandist film Triumph of the Will, glorifying then popular German extremism. The only things that ostensibly separate these acts of genuflection are the realities of degree, and 83 years.
This reprehensible behaviour is also underlined by that tired, “special relationship” twaddle, about an asymmetrical arrange-ment weighted heavily against the junior partner, and to which May clings in view of what looks set to be a messy and possibly (for at least 48 per cent of the British voting population) elegiac decree absolute from the EU. One may be assured that Trump will treat this liaison with the same unfettered contempt he has shown for domestic and external matters.
Whatever next, one wonders.
