I had the chance to test-drive a model packing an Intel Core i7-6700HQ quad-core processor running at 2.6GHz, a 256 Solid State Drive for booting, 16 gigabytes of RAM and a full terabyte of storage on the hard drive. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 offers 8GB of dedicated graphics memory.
The 15.6-inch IPS display at 1920x1080-pixel resolution lights up the game action for you, if you’re not too dazzled already by the keyboard and laptop edges ablaze with LED lights. AlienFX Lighting Zones allow for up to 80 quadrillion lighting combinations, so feel free to customise both the laptop and the more than 130 games offering the option of creating or downloading unique themes.
The upgraded Alienware TactX keyboard can be programmed for faster player response via five keys that be set to 15 different functions per application or game and 108 key commands for maximum actions per minute.
N-Key Rollover technology allows gamers to press more than 10 buttons at the same time. You’re looking at the only keyboard on a laptop with 2.2mm of key travel, so you can react more rapidly.
If you get over-excited, the keyboard’s |reinforced with a steel back-plate. That means more uniform feedback as well as a guarantee that nothing’s going to break anytime during the first 10 million keystrokes.
The laptop is designed to be upgraded via the Alienware Graphics Amplifier port, which enables future-proofing of full-length, dual-wide graphics. There’s also a four-port USB 3.0 hub for added peripherals.
As devoted gamers know, extensive play results in a lot of wear and tear. To offset this, the Alienware laptop uses higher maximum thermal design power (TDP) so it can handle a higher total wattage from the internal components, leading to higher-level performance. The whole ventilation system has been upgraded to keep the laptop cool under extreme graphics pressure.
The sounds from the games are terrific thanks to the Sound Blaster S-Fi board and Klipch standard speakers.
Players of online fast-action games will be thrilled with the fast and simultaneous Killer Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless Wi-Fi 802.11ac Internet connections, which ensure there’s no lag during play.
The Alienware 15 has all the necessary ports – two Type-A USB 3.0 ports, one Type-C USB 3 port, a Thunderbolt (Type-C USB), an HDMI 2.0 and a mini-DisplayPort 1.2.
The model I tested ran on the Windows 10 Home operating system and started up very fast. The Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0 give it an impressive rating for 3D game performance. This comprised an average 127.6 frames per second – minimum 24.7 and maximum 179.9 fps.
The Alienware 15 laptop has a starting price of Bt84,990, varying according to the configuration of CPU, GPU, hard drive and RAM, and comes with a three-year warranty.
