It’s gladdening that the Northeast has been named by CNN as one of the world’s top 17 destinations in 2017. The Tourism Authority of Thailand should take this opportunity to give Isaan a strong promotional push.
The Northeast is packed with attractions, including famous dishes, beautiful nature, art and culture, a rich history and wonderful temples.
Three sites alone are sufficient to dub this region “Amazing Isaan”. The Jurassic Park and Sirindhorn Dinosaur Museum in Kalasin boasts the largest collection of dinosaur fossils in Southeast Asia, while the nearby Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum in Khon Kaen has more fossilised wonders.
The Ban Chiang archaeological site in Udon Thani has a Unesco World Heritage listing for its prehistoric finds dating back over 5,000 years.
And then there’s Prasat Hin Phanom Rung in Buri Ram, a thousand-year-old Khmer temple complex set on the rim of an extinct volcano, where visitors can watch the sun shine through its 15 aligned gates.
