THE FIRST truly wireless earphones, Apple’s AirPods are smart and offer great sound quality for enhancing the use of your iPhone or other iOS devices.
The AirPods look like the classic EarPods but without any cable. They come as two separate left and right earbuds with a short stick connected to the earpiece.
The connection of AirPods is very simple to set up and the AirPods are comfortable to wear. During the test, I was able to wear the earphones for hours on end because they light and do not have be inserted into the ear canal. And I was pleased to find that the AirPods reproduced good quality sounds with clear music details and good bass.
The AirPods come with a carrying case that doubles as a portable power bank to recharge the earphones. For the first use, you simply open the cover of the carrying case near your iPhone and select the Join AirPods option on the screen. The next time, when you open the carrying case near your iPhone, it will report the remaining battery left on the AirPods and the charging case.
For other devices, you may have to press and hold the small button at the bottom rear of the charging case until the LED light starts pulsing white. You can find AirPods in the Bluetooth connection of your iPhone.
After you have paired the AirPods to your iPhone, they will be also ready for use with other iOS and Mac devices using your same Apple ID. After the first Bluetooth pairing, whenever you pull AirPods out of the charging case, they instantly turn on and connect to your iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad or Mac.
And when you put AirPods in your ear, the sound will automatically be sent to them. In the same way, the music will pause when you remove them. That means being able to stop listening to chat with a friend by removing one AirPod from your ear. The music will resume when you put the AirPod back.
The earphones are driven by a custom Apple W1 chip and they also use optical sensors and accelerometer to detect when they are in your ears. Each AirPod has one W1 chip and two microphones.
Whether you’re using both pods or just one, the W1 chip automatically routes the audio and engages the microphone. And when you’re on a call or talking to Siri, an additional accelerometer works with beam-forming microphones to filter out background noise and focus on the sound of your voice.
The AirPods also support Siri audio commands. You cap tap either AirPod twice to activate Siri and give it verbal commands, like ordering it to play a playlist, turn up the volume, call a contact or ask it to show a direction.
The AirPods have good battery life, providing 5-hour listening time on one charge. The carrying case provides multiple additional charges for more than 24 hours. After just 15 minutes of recharging with the case, the AirPods will give you three hours of listening time.
Apple AirPods have a suggested retail price of Bt6,900.
