Having said that, Editorial does tend to edit letters according to its own agenda. On the other hand, news is a job for professional journalists who are supposed to research before writing. News should be unbiased, not partisan and based on facts. Failure in this public responsibility results in fake news, or even worse, propaganda.
However, there are essentially two types of opinion: those based on fundamental research and others emotionally evoked, “off the top of the head”. The letter not only confuses news with opinion but belongs in the second category. We all have a right to opinion in democracies, it’s called freedom of expression.
It is a fact that Brexit came about because the majority of laws governing the UK were being made in Brussels not London. British people wanted to reclaim their sovereignty that had been signed away by the Treaties of Maarstrict and Lisbon. Signing away sovereignty by handing over control of a country’s laws and governance to an alien power is treason. That’s exactly what it is. The writer should research the history of the EU, that began as a free-trade area, and its political objective of a totalitarian, federal European superstate, not dissimilar to the USSR.
David Iggulden is absolutely right when he refers to the European Union as “A titanic tyranny heading for an iceberg”. It is happening now. The EU denies the UK or any other member state the right to negotiate their own trade arrangements with other countries. The EU Parliament is nothing more than a speaking forum. MEPs are not law-makers. By failing to control its external borders, the EU opened its 28 members states to uncontrolled freedom of movement, an invasion from the Middle East and North Africa. Several member states are intent on regaining their sovereignty, currency and control of immigration as individual nations. The Euro currency is expected to collapse because there was no common fiscal policy.
