Your letters are safe in the editor’s hands

Re: “Everything you wanted to know about ‘fake news’ but were afraid to ask”, Public Forum, March 13.

I’d like to respond to JC Wilcox’s outrageous claim that newspaper editors  “ tend to edit letters according to [their] own agenda”. To some degree editors and writers are benign enemies in the sense that the writer may want to expand upon his arguments while the editor needs to save space and may want to curtail them. But as someone who has had hundreds of newspaper letters published, I cannot think of a single instance when my letter was edited in such a way as to change it’s intended meaning.
Even with newspapers that are hostile to my views, I have always found that newspaper editors were fair to me when they published my letters.
Although Mr Wilcox has written excellent letters on vegetarianism, he sounds utterly preposterous when writing about anything else. But I know he feels the same way about me!
