Re: “Public support pours in for Friends of Asian Elephants Foundation with Bt20m donations so far”, Breaking News, March 18.

This is news giving both very shocking and touching emotions after the Friends of Asian Elephants (FAE) announced on Monday its closure, mainly due to inadequate funding, prompting people to pour more than Bt20 million into one of the Foundation’s accounts by Friday.
FAE was set up in 1993 and well known as the world’s first elephant hospital. Over 24 years it helped 4,651 elephants – treating sick and injured elephants nationwide, plus ended up having nomadic elephants from Bangkok. It also struggled to stop nomadic
elephants in other areas of the country, and helped get draft law on elephant welfare made into
legislation.
Fortunately, FAE’s financial hardship has promptly been assisted through donations from people with mercy for the Foundation to continue its work in the short-term, amid society’s concern about looking after elephants’ health, as well as FAE’s long-term welfare.
In the future, will it have a sustainable way to survive, aside from only getting donations for support to avoid dire financial straits again?
