Fake news versus the sobering facts of climate change

Re: “The myth of melting ice and rising seas”, Opinion, March 21.

Sam Khoury’s cherry-picking of history is reminiscent of the old cigarette company claim that smoking is safe as Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping consumed four packs a day yet lived into his 90s. Or the holocaust-denial claim that Auschwitz wasn’t so bad as the remains of a cinema and a swimming pool have been discovered there. Fake news was invented long before Donald Trump.
The reality is that 16 of the 17 warmest years in recorded history have occurred since 2000 with increased heat content of the oceans and lots of observable data such as earlier springs and worldwide damage to coral caused by bleaching. Let’s hope you are right, Sam, because three-quarters of all major cities in the world are on a vulnerable shoreline. But what if you are wrong?
