Hints in Syria that human race could be doomed

Re: “Children paying a heavy price in war-torn regions”, Editorial, April 23.

It would seem to me that we are a lost race; a failed experiment of Darwinian evolution.
What shame and ignominy we heap upon ourselves as we watch children’s bodies give up their lifeblood to the blasted landscape of Syria, an obliterated country drowning in sadness, hatred, barbarism and the depths of human depravity.
War is a vicious trade that carries no glory, but instead bears the void of now empty wombs losing their fruit to monsters, and the sundered hearts of surviving parents, relatives, friends and those of us who watch with pain and wrath in equal measure.
To dwell on the tragedy of the human condition is to risk greater sorrow, more so when we impotently weep in witness to what we do to ourselves.
What are we, that we cast our treasure aside so wantonly?
