What goes on behind the scenes at a dairy

Re: “More on milk and ‘calcium depletion’ hypothesis”, June 5.

Even if it can’t be categorically proven that drinking animal milk weakens the bones, there are other reasons to avoid it. It has been linked to cancer of the prostate gland, lung, breast, ovaries and Type One diabetes. It also contains saturated fat and dietary cholesterol that increases the risk of heart disease.
But the biggest reason to avoid dairy is the cruelty. An advertisement currently appearing on billboards and in newspapers in the UK says it all. Titled “Humane milk is a myth”, it shows a picture of a cow captioned with this message from Sandra Higgens, campaign director of Go Vegan World: “I went vegan the day I visited a dairy. The mothers, still bloody from birth, searched and called frantically for their babies. Their daughters, fresh from their mothers’ wombs but separated from them, trembled and cried piteously, drinking milk from rubber teats on the wall instead of their mothers’ nurturing bodies. All because humans take their milk. Their sons are slaughtered for their flesh and they themselves are slaughtered at 6 years.
Their natural lifespan is 25 years. I could no longer participate in that. Can you?”
