For the benefit of readers who may not know, Somtow Sucharitkul is actually the renowned musical composer, conductor, writer and polymath SP Somtow. He strikes a sombre note at the end of his eloquent letter in urging us to make a final attempt to save human civilisation, flawed though it is. Fear not, Khun Somtow: help may be on the way.
Social media, whose pronouncements are always infallible, report detecting a conversation that allegedly took place recently in a distant galaxy. I pass it on despite serious doubts about its authenticity. Social-media freaks have imaginatively designated the speakers as God and Gabriel:
Gabriel: Sir, the humans are in trouble again.
God: Humans? Who are they?
Gabriel: Creatures you created aeons ago. In an obscure galaxy out there. On the third planet of a minor solar system.
God: Ah, yes. I remember now. Didn’t we evolve them out of some sort of mammal?
Gabriel: Yes, sir. They’re primates, sir.
God: Primates. Jesus. I should have known better. You can’t do anything with primates. Primates belong on the scrap-heap of evolution. Next time we’ll try out the insects. We’ll design an insect that’s big and warm and cuddly and super-smart. But didn’t that species – what do you call them? – extinctify themselves a long time ago?
Gabriel: Humans, sir. They’re called humans. No, they’re still hanging on.
God: Well, tell them to let go. We don’t need primates. They’re obsolete.
Gabriel: Sir, why don’t we give them another chance? Remember what you told them a long time ago? “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.”
God: Hmmmm. Yes, I did say that, didn’t I? All right, give them a shot of evolutionary mojo. Tweak their genetic structure. Make them a kinder, gentler species.
Gabriel: Yes, sir. Smarter, too, sir?
God: Smarter first and foremost, Gabe. Always.
So there is hope, Khun Somtow. If you believe social media.
