Sinister developments in Thailand are going unremarked

Re: “Paranoid conspiracy theorists have found a saviour in Trump”, Have Your Say, yesterday.

Letters from those who see “Marxist Globalists” lurking in every dark corner, and Donald Trump as the saviour of Western civilisation are now a prominent feature of “Have Your Say”, and of course everyone is entitled to their opinion on whatever subjects they wish to highlight. However, it is disappointing, if not entirely surprising, that increasingly peculiar developments here in Thailand so often go unremarked.
For example, the 84-year-old social critic Sulak Sivaraksa has finally been called to a military court to hear a charge of lese majeste for comments he made at an academic seminar in 2014 regarding King Naresuan, who reigned in Siam from AD1590 to 1605, and the former Pheu Thai Party politician Watana Muangsook has been charged with sedition for claiming that the plaque commemorating the 1932 revolution which was removed under mysterious circumstances from the Royal Plaza some months ago is a national
asset. These reports surely deserve some attention and comment, yet silence prevails.
