Who wins after yet another anti-Israel vote?

It is an open secret that the United Nations routinely conducts anti-Israel votes which automatically get a huge majority due to the dominance of Islamic countries plus others whose dependence on the oil price means they dare not upset Arab and Muslim nations.

As far as the UN General Assembly is concerned, any resolution against Israel is very popular, and dozens of Israel-bashing decisions over the decades bear witness to that fact. Lashing out at the “Zionist entity” is the single, indeed the only, unifying cause that unites the otherwise bickering Arab and Muslim countries.
The latest vote condemning American recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital must be seen in this light, and as yet another farcical voting ceremony at the UN.
The Arabs, who hailed a “victory for Palestine”, prefer not to delve too deep in the surprisingly high number of countries that either opposed the anti-US vote or abstained. The US has been brandished a non-trustworthy party in peace negotiations and the Palestinians now refuse to talk to Trump’s emissaries.
And now what? Who stands to gain from this? Only Israel, of course. The current right-wing, religious-fanatic government in Israel is happy to drag its feet on peace efforts and will gladly keep the current status quo for the next generation and beyond. The Palestinians, who now foolishly celebrate their Pyrrhic victory, stand to lose not only the (already slight) chance of getting their own state in the long run, but vital US aid as well. No American money will mean no lifeline for the fledgling Palestinian economy, and waiting for their oil-rich Arab brethren to fill in the blanks might be a very long shot indeed. In the meantime, Jerusalem will remain for all practical purposes Israel’s not-so-united capital, with a US embassy building lurking in the near future. The dynamics of such a move are unpredictable, but it seems reasonable to expect other countries to follow suit. Should this come to pass, the Arabs will be left to count their losses.
